History:

The Fort George, situated in the Highlands of Scotland near Inverness, is an 18th-century artillery fort built in response to the Jacobite Rising of 1745. The former garrison is now a living museum with the purpose of conserving and displaying information about the military history of Scotland. The fort was commissioned by King George II in 1747, when the Jacobite Rebels of the Forty-five were defeated at the bloody Battle of Culloden. It was constructed on the orders of the Duke of Cumberland, the king's second son who led the government forces against the rebels. The fort was designed to be impregnable, and took 40 years to complete. The walls of the fort are up to 7 metres thick and the entire perimeter is defended with cannon emplacements, gun batteries and a network of bastions. Inside, the barracks and guard towers are linked by meandering passageways, which open onto parade grounds and a battery of field guns. Today, visitors can explore the history of the Highlanders and their role in both regional and national conflicts, as well as learn about the lives of the soldiers who were posted at the fort.
