The Royal Yacht Britannia is the former royal yacht of the British Royal Family. She sailed the world, travelling a total of 1,087,623 nautical miles (2,014,278 KM). During her 44 years of service, she was in active duty for The Queen, transporting her and other members of the British Royal Family on royal tours and diplomatic missions. The Royal Yacht Britannia was built at the John Brown Shipyard in Clydebank, Scotland, in 1953. She was constructed for the British Royal Navy, and completed in April 1954. Britannia was 185.1 metres (607 feet) long, 15.5 metres (51 feet) at the beam, and weighed 9,577 tonnes. She was propelled by a steam turbine and four diesel engines, and had a range of 8,000 nautical miles. The Queen christened Britannia in July of 1954. In the summer of 1997, Britannia was decommissioned and auctioned off to a private buyer. In October of that year, the vessel set sail for Edinburgh, Scotland, where she now serves as a museum and tourist attraction.
