The history of the Ironbridge Gorge began in 1709 when Abraham Darby I of Coalbrookdale made the first usable cast iron bridge in the world. It was named the Iron Bridge and constructed across the River Severn near the town of Ironbridge. During the next hundred years, the area became one of the most important industrial regions in the world with coal mines, ironworks, and lime and limestone quarries. In the 1800s, the Industrial Revolution moved to the North and the popularity of the Ironbridge Gorge declined.
