History:

Bath Abbey is a parish church of the Church of England located in Bath, England. Founded in the 7th century, it is one of the oldest churches in the United Kingdom and an active and vibrant part of the city. The first known Christian church at Bath was built in the late 7th century by King Ine of Wessex, who dedicated it to Saint Peter. In 871, the Church was repeatedly destroyed by the Danes, but was rebuilt in the early 11th century. Bath Abbey became the only Benedictine monastery in England when, in 1093, Bishop John of Tours sent two Benedictine monks to take control of the church. In 1539, King Henry VIII dissolved all the monasteries in England and so the Benedictine monks left Bath Abbey. The Abbey was then used as a parish church until in 1569, Queen Elizabeth I granted it to Christopher Codrington who undertook extensive restorations. In 1611, King James I returned it to the local community and it’s now a vibrant and busy place of worship. Over the centuries the abbey has been extensively restored and remodelled, and it has a wonderfully diverse range of architecture and style. Today, the Abbey remains an active place of worship and a popular destination for many visitors.
