It is the largest castle in Wales and one of the biggest in Europe. It was built in a strategic location on the site of an existing fortification to protect the nearby town of Caerphilly and the surrounding area from Welsh forces. The fortification walls are just over 12 meters high and has an impressive concentric design; it also features a network of interlinked moats and lakes, which were used to trap attackers and flood them out. The castle also includes a drawbridge, several towers, and a large inner courtyard. Caerphilly Castle saw some military action during its long history. During the 14th century, Welsh forces from the local community of Caerphilly briefly captured and held the castle.
