The Salisbury Cathedral, located in Salisbury, England, is a medieval Anglican cathedral built in the early 13th century. It is famous for its impressive, tall spire and for containing some of the best examples of Early English architecture from the period. The history of Salisbury Cathedral began in 1220 when Bishop of Old Sarum, Richard le Poor granted permission for a new cathedral to be built in Salisbury and a competition was held to select the architect. The winner, Elias of Dereham, began work on the cathedral and the first stone was laid in 1220. The establishment of the cathedral was part of a larger plan to move the see of Old Sarum, an old Saxon settlement which had been the home for the Bishop of Salisbury for about 500 years. Bishop le Poor was keen on moving the see to a more central location and thus Salisbury was selected. Work on the cathedral was completed in 1258. The main body of the cathedral was consecrated in 1266 and the spire completed in 1320. During the 14th century, spire was the tallest in the world and could be seen from up to twenty-five miles away. During the 16th century, the cathedral was greatly damaged due to the Civil War when the spire was damaged and cannon fire hit the building. The spire was restored in the 17th century and the building was further restored in the 18th century when the north and south transepts were refurbished. In 1790, a large bell-tower, the belfry, was added and more restoration was done in the 19th century. The building underwent major renovations in the 1940s following the bombing of the nearby city of Salisbury during the Second World War. The cathedral is now maintained as one of the most important forms of medieval architecture in the region. It is also the burial site of Britain’s first Prime Minister, Sir Robert Walpole, and the only remaining copy of the Magna Carta.
