The Battle Abbey is a large and well preserved medieval abbey in East Sussex, England. It is one of the most important and well preserved medieval abbeys in the United Kingdom. The abbey was built on the site of the battlefield by William the Conqueror in 1076. It was his intention to found a shrine to the fallen, and to honor the men who fell that day. The building was begun around 1077, and according to the Domesday Book of 1086, it was completed by the middle of the century. It was the first major religious house to be established in what is now England and was one of the first places of pilgrimage in Europe. The Battle Abbey was the official burial site of the vanquished Saxon King, Harold II. His remains are held inside the tomb situated at the center of the grounds. A monument to his memory stands near the tomb. The grounds of the abbey include a large walled garden, a wealth of sculptures and monuments, and many other buildings and works of art.
