History:
The Churchill War Rooms are a museum in London, England that serves to commemorate the life and achievements of Sir Winston Churchill. It is housed in a secret bunker in Whitehall and includes the Cabinet War Rooms, interactive exhibits, and an underground historical museum. The Churchill War Rooms were constructed in the late 1930s in anticipation of war with Germany. The building was specifically designed as a safe environment for use during air raids; it could not be infiltrated or destroyed by bombs, shelling, or gunfire. The Cabinet War Rooms were the nerve centre of Britain's government during WWII and the home of the Prime Minister and his Cabinet Ministers during the duration of the conflict. The War Rooms also acted as a communications headquarters and intelligence centre. It was from here that Churchill and his staff coordinated the allied strategy during one of the darkest periods in British history. The War Rooms were officially opened by King George VI on 28 August 1939 and they remained operational until 16 August 1945. After the war, the bunker fell into disrepair and was due for demolition in the late 1960s. Thankfully, a local campaign led by a group of history enthusiasts began in 1984 and their efforts were rewarded when the War Rooms were officially opened to the public in April 2005 by the then Prime Minister, Tony Blair. Since its opening, the Churchill War Rooms have become one of the most visited museums in London with over 500,000 visitors annually. As well as drawing in many of those interested in the Second World War, the museum also provides an invaluable insight into Winston Churchill's life and his dynamic leadership of Britain.
