History:

The National Gallery in London, England was founded in 1824 when Parliamentary enactments collected 38 pictures from the banker John Julius Angerstein’s art collection. The Parliamentary enactments also led to the creation of a building for the new National Gallery, begun in 1832 and opened to the public in 1838. The national foundation brought together like-minded, wealthy individuals to disseminate and display the historically important collection of fine art. Among the most significant of these philanthropists were banker Robert Vernon, who donated his collection of old masters in 1847, and Henry Tate, a sugar merchant, whose bequest of 66 works gave the gallery the nucleus of its 19th-century collection.
