History:

The original Globe Theatre was built in 1599 near the River Thames in London, England. It was a three-story, open-air theatre, constructed mainly of timber and plaster. In 1613, a cannon shot fired during a performance of Henry VIII ignited the thatched roof, causing the theatre to burn to the ground. The Globe was rebuilt the following year, only to be pulled down in 1644. It wasn’t until almost 300 years later, in the late 1950s, that an effort was made to rebuild the Globe. Scheduled to be dedicated as part of the 1979 celebrations of the 450th anniversary of Shakespeare’s birth, work began in 1970 under the direction of the Globe Trust and its Director, John Russell Taylor. Construction was completed in June of that year and a full replica of the Elizabethan theatre was unveiled to the public. The modern Globe Theatre stands next to the site of the original theatre and features many of the same architectural features. The theatre’s exterior and interior are designed to closely resemble the original theatre while also incorporating modern amenities and safety precautions. It is one of the few surviving examples of a 16th century theatre in the country.
