History:

The Albert Dock in Liverpool, England was first proposed to the British Government in 1825 and Parliament subsequently approved the construction of the dock in the same year. The project was carried out by local entrepreneur Jesse Hartley and engineer Thomas Steers, who are credited with the design and construction of the Albert Dock. The dock opened in 1846 and quickly attracted shipping trade from all over the world. Due to its strategic position on the Mersey, the Albert Dock quickly surpassed all other docks in the Liverpool area in terms of its importance in the transoceanic trade network. Trade in goods such as cotton, sugar, tobacco and tea were some of the most important commodities passing through the Albert Dock. The dock was so successful that Hartley even purchased the neighbouring Stanley Dock in 1854 and invested in a new graving dock on the Albert. During the twentieth century, the Albert Dock developed into a major hub for Cunard cruises and passenger liners. In 1983, the Albert Dock was named as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
