The history of Old Trafford Stadium in Manchester, England dates back to 1910. It was originally known as Newton Heath LYR Football Club Stadium. However, in 1902 the club was renamed Manchester United and they moved into the stadium shortly afterwards. The stadium was built to accommodate an estimated 80,000 spectators and the first match was played in February 1910. The first international match also took place in 1910 with England playing Ireland. By 1913 the stadium had added hosting of rugby union matches, and by the 1930s it was hosting international and big club matches from across the UK. In the decades following World War II both the Manchester United team and the stadium were redeveloped. In 1947–48 the South Stand, the first two-tier structure, was constructed, and the North Stand followed in 1953. The ground capacity was now around 70,000. The 1960s and 70s saw further modernisation of the stadium, including the famous "Munich" clock which commemorates the Munich Air Disaster in 1958. In the 1980s and 90s further stands were added, and a significant effort was made to improve the condition of this historic venue.
