The White Tower, also known as the Great Tower or the Tower of London, was built under the orders of William The Conqueror, and was the chief defensive structure of the City of London. Construction of the White Tower began in 1078 and was completed by 1097. During the reign of Henry III, the Tower served as a royal palace. For over the next 300 years, the Tower was an important centre of government in England. It housed the Treasuries, Royal Jewels, and Regalia, and acted as the residence of London’s lieutenants. In the 16th century, when Henry VIII assumed the throne, the Tower was also used as a prison. It held some of the most infamous prisoners in English history, including Thomas More, Guy Fawkes, and Anne Boleyn.
