The Christ Church College in Oxford, England is a college of the University of Oxford. It was originally christened Cardinal College by King Henry VIII in 1525, when it was established as a men-only college. It was later re-founded by Queen Elizabeth I in 1545 and christened The Royal College of Christ Church. The Bishop of Winchester, Thomas Mildmay, was appointed Provost of the College. Soon after, Thomas Cromwell, the Secretary to the King, presented the College to Christ Church Cathedral. The original golden gates with the "IHS" monogram, or symbol of the holy name of Jesus, were given to the college by Queen Elizabeth I in 1558. The college is known primarily for its educational excellence, its academic achievements, and for its outstanding faculty and alumni. Some well-known alumni of Christ Church include Prime Minister William Ewart Gladstone, Robert Harley 1st Earl of Oxford, and Prime Minister William Pitt the Younger. From 1570 to 1574, the college was refounded as a house of divinity; renamed The King's College; and was the first college in Oxford to admit women in 1611.
