The theater was built on the former site of the Shakespeare Memorial Theatre, which was sadly destroyed by fire two years prior. The new theater was designed by architect Charles J. Phipps and features Neo-Gothic architecture. The Royal Shakespeare Theatre opened with a large seating capacity of around 1,900 people and showcased many of William Shakespeare’s plays throughout its existence. In 1930, the theater underwent major expansion and renovation in order to modernize and increase its seating capacity to 2,500. The renovations included a new stage, new lighting advancements, and a new ventilation system that allowed for the temperatures in the theater to be controlled. Throughout its years, the theater has undergone several different phases and renames, such as the Shakespeare Memorial Theatre (1932-1960), The Royal Court of Shakespeare (1960-1971), and the Royal Shakespeare Theatre (1971 to the present). During its lifetime, the theater has held plays that featured some of the world’s greatest actors, such as Laurence Olivier, Judi Dench, and Kenneth Branagh. In 1990, the theater was closed for major renovations in order to restore it to its original look, including the pre-1930 era design.
