The worship methodology followed in Thiruvotriyur Thyagaraja Swamy Temple is a mix of Saivite and Vaishnavite rituals. The chief deity of the temple is Lord Shiva, known by several names like Tiruvotriyur Natarajar, Padalanathar, Angalanathar and Irulappa Nathar. The main worship rituals performed include Abhishekam, which is the pouring of consecrated water, milk and other liquids on Lord Shivas Shivalinga, Deepa Pooja, or the offering of sacred lamps to the deity and Naivedyam, or the offering of fruits and food to Lord Shiva.
