Badrakaliyamman temple in Chennai is dedicated to the fierce form of the Goddess Devi, goddess of time and destruction. The temple is situated in the North Mada Street in Mylapore area and is known among the locals as Goddess Muthu Mariamman Temple. The temple is more than 200 years old and was built for the local landlord Mr. Chennayya Chetty. The presiding deity of the temple is Goddess Badrakaliyamman, who is an incarnation of Goddess Durga. The temple follows an ancient style of worship, known as the ‘Agama Sastra’ system, which is deemed to be very auspicious and powerful. In this system, the devotees perform special poojas, abishekam, and homams for the deity and offer devotion in the form of prayers and chanting of mantras. The main festival celebrated in the temple is the 10-day Badra kaliyamman therthu festival during the months of December and January when lakhs of devotees from all over Tamil Nadu flock to the temple to pay their respects to Goddess Badra Kaliyamman. Apart from this, special pujas such as Nalla Chellam, Nallamalai Therthu, and Soora Pongal are also performed in the temple.
