History:

The Temple is built by Kulotunga Chola I as per inscriptions on its outer walls and hence the temple is known as ‘Kulotungachola Chaturvedimangalam’. 3. The temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva who is worshipped as Mahalingeswarar. 4. The temple has five gopurams among which the eastern gopuram is the highest towers with 11 stories and is 123 feet in height. 5. There is a one-peaked Vimana on the top of the Mahalingeswarar shrine and four small gopurams added in the form of a square mandapa. 6. Some of the notable features of the temple are ‘Nataraja Mandapam’ which is believed to be one of its kind in the southern part of India. 7. The temple complex also houses a small shrine of Jagadeeswari (Parvati) which is located to the left of the entrance. 8. The Mahalingaswamy Temple in Thiruvidaimarudur,Tamil Nadu is an important Shaivite pilgrimage centre. It is one of the 275 Padal Petra Sthalams. The main deity of the temple is Lord Shiva, worshipped in the form of Lord Mahalingaswamy. Devotees offer worship to Him with prayers and ritualistic ceremonies. The temple follows the Agama kind of worship style, where the priests offer daily and special puja. The daily puja consists of Varadava (early morning puja), Maha pooja (afternoon puja) and Arthajama pooja (evening puja). As part of the special puja, Kartikai Deepam is performed on a full moon day in the bright half of Karthikai month. During this festival, special pujas are conducted throughout the day in the temple.
