The mosque was designed by architect, Abdul Aziz Mango after getting the commission from King Faisal bin Abdul-Aziz in the 1970s. The architecture of Masjid al-Faisal is distinctive and striking, and sets it apart from other mosques in Saudi-Arabia. The mosque’s most notable feature is its large, central dome. This is flanked by four smaller corner domes, and is said to be one of the tallest in the region at a height of 75 meters. Along the sides of the interior, four rows of seven arches, supported by white marble columns, face inward towards the central dome. These are both aesthetically pleasing and serve to support the structure. The mosque’s minaret is located towards the rear, and is 280-foot tall, making it the third tallest minaret in the world. The exterior of the mosque is designed in traditional Islamic style,with the main entrance having three arches and multiple oriel windows above it. The walls are made from a combination of marble and other local materials. Masjid al-Faisal’s interior is painted white and features delicate Arabic calligraphy above and around the main prayer hall. In the center of the prayer hall, there is a large pool of water that reflects the light from above. The interior also features warm wood accents throughout, adding to the overall feeling of the space. Finally, the mosque also has a library and education center, as well as multiple other rooms intended for studying, gatherings, and lectures.
