Architecture:

The Masjid al-Rahmah is an iconic and well-known mosque located in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. Its construction dates back to the Ottoman period of the late 1800s, with certain elements of its design inspired by the Fatimid dynasty of 12th century Cairo. The mosque is built upon a raised platform with access through a main entrance door. Inside, the layout of the mosque is a traditional two-aisled plan. The main prayer hall is divided into two bays, each with an ornate mihrab adorned in colourful mosaics and sculptural relief. An elevated minbar, or pulpit, is located in the center of the prayer hall. One of the two domed bays on either side of the entrance door has an additional platform where the imam stands while leading the prayer. The exterior of the mosque displays a symmetrical composition of four sections. The lower levels are laid with intricate brickwork symmetrically between the corner minarets. The upper level is a series of nested domes decorated with ceramic and enamel tiles, and topped with black-and-gold onion domes. The fourth section of the exterior comprises the tall minarets located in the four corners of the mosque. Here, the structure diverges from the traditional Ottoman mosque plan in that the four minarets are not tapered and are topped with black-and-gold cupolas. The overall architectural style of Masjid al-Rahmah is generally considered to be a blend of fatimid and ottoman styles, and is highly representative of the unique architecture of the region.
