: Masjid al-Qiblatayn is one of the oldest mosques in the world, located in Mecca, Saudi Arabia. According to Islamic tradition, Muhammad (PBUH) received a divine instruction here to re-orientate his prayer from Jerusalem to Mecca, and hence the name Qiblatayn (two qiblas). This unique mosque has two mihrabs, or prayer niches, from which Muslims direct their prayers towards the two holy cities of Mecca and Jerusalem, and as such it serves as a reminder of this momentous event in Muslim history. The mosque was also used as a gathering place for important counsels and debates, such as the historic Islamic Conference of 661 AH (1263 AD), one of the most important conferences in Islamic history which formalised the dogma of the Shia and Sunni branches of Islam.
