The Masjid al-Musharrafah is located in Al-Balad, the historical centre of Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. The mosque is one of the most iconic religious sites in Jeddah, being one of the few mosques that still feature traditional Islamic architecture. The design of the mosque is attributed to the Mamluk period (1250-1517). The mosques basic design consists of a large open hall, with a domed ceiling and arcades extending from each wall. The main entrance is a traditional mihrab, a semi-circular niche in the wall facing Mecca. The interior hall is surrounded by four tall minarets, each approximately 30 metres high. The interior is decorated with elaborate tiles and stucco artwork depicting traditional Islamic geometric patterns, floral designs, and Arabesque motifs. There is also an impressive looking wooden minbar, or pulpit, at the center of the space, which is used by the Imam for prayer on Fridays. The exterior of the mosque is encased in white marble and has an impressive dome at the center. The dome is finished with an intricate pattern of inlaid geometric designs in different colors, with alternating colors of sky blue, green, and white. On either side of the entrance are two small courtyards with marble benches, where worshippers can sit and relax before entering the prayer hall.
