Brief History:
is located in the old fishing and trading village of Qalhat, on the Eastern coast of the Sultanate of Oman. It is believed to have been built during the Mamluk era (14th to 15th century) and has since served as a place of worship for Muslims for generations. The building features a main prayer hall and two minarets, and is surrounded by a square courtyard. The mosque is neglected but still intact, with some visible signs of restoration work carried out in recent years. It is one of the most famous mosque in Oman which you must visit.
Architecture:
The Al Qalhat South North Mosque is a large mosque located in Sur, in the Al Batinah region of Oman. The mosque was constructed in the 17th century and is the oldest surviving structure in the country. Its architecture reflects the traditional style of Islamic architecture, with an elongated front and back side. The mosque has two minarets, one to the north and one to the south, as well as a large mihrab—an area to face Mecca during prayer. The mosque’s exterior walls feature intricate brick and stone ornaments, which create a beautiful and peaceful atmosphere. Inside, the walls are lined with stunning glazed tiles of varying colors, including blue and white. The mosque also features woodcarvings and intricate domes, which contribute to the mosque’s overall beauty and grandeur. This is why, it is considered one of the most beautiful mosque in the world.
