Brief History:
Al Awabi South Mosque is one of the oldest mosques in Oman. It is located in the Dhofar region and dates back to the 17th century. It was built by Sultan Said bin Sultan Al Busaidi, in order to honor the Al Busaidi dynasty that ruled Oman. The mosque was renovated and expanded in the 19th century by Sultan Said bin Sultan Al Busaidi. The complex consists of the main mosque, a courtyard, shrines, a minaret, and a graveyard. Al Awabi South Mosque is a designated heritage site and attracts many visitors each year. It is one of the most famous mosque in Oman which you must visit.
Architecture:
The Al Awabi South Mosque in Oman is an example of traditional Islamic architecture. The mosque features large domes, minarets, and a central courtyard. The walls around the courtyard are decorated with intricate geometric patterns. The mosque can also be seen from a distance due to its white and blue decorative tiles. The entrance of the mosque is a large arched doorway, with a marble fountain surrounding the entrance. Beyond the entrance, the interior of the mosque is covered in stunning Turkish rugs and intricate tilework. The prayer hall is divided into five sections with a single, central mihrab. The building also features a library for religious texts and a place for a Quran recitation corner. This is why, it is considered one of the most beautiful mosque in the world.
