Brief History:
Al Aqur South Mosque in Oman is one of the oldest existing Islamic monuments in Oman and dates back to the 18th century. It was originally built as a Sunni mosque, but was renovated and converted to a Shi’ite mosque in the 19th century. The mosque is characterized by its unique style of domes and minarets, all decorated with ornate designs typical of the era in which it was built. The Al Aqur South Mosque in Oman is a striking example of Islamic architecture. The mosque is situated in a small, wind-swept area on the southern coast of Oman, near Sur. It is composed of an open courtyard surrounded by domed roofs and a series of large, pointed arches. The structure is made of mud-brick and limestone, with a surface of green and blue, glazed tile. A large dome dominates the interior, and is surrounded on either side by smaller ones. The mosque is topped with a large, golden crescent moon, a traditional symbol of the Islamic faith. The open courtyard of the mosque features a fountain and a circular prayer hall. The prayer hall is lit by large, intricate chandeliers while an exquisite minbar sits at its center. Ornately decorated woodwork frames the entrance to the mosque, adding to its grandeur. This is why, it is considered one of the most beautiful mosque in the world.
