Brief History:

Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque (مسجد السلطان قابوس الأكبر in Arabic) is located in Muscat, the capital of the Sultanate of Oman. It was built in 2004 to commemorate the thirty-fourth anniversary of Sultan Qaboos bin Said Al Said’s reign. The mosque, which is one of the largest of its kind, has a prayer hall that can accommodate up to 20,000 people. The main prayer hall is the largest of its kind in the world, extending across an area of 12,000 square meters. The building is predominantly built from marble, which gives it a luxurious feel. The walls are adorned with intricate designs and ornamentation in gold leaf, and the floors are covered in Italian and Persian carpets that are hand-knotted in wool or silk filled with intricate patterns. The mosque also has seven prayer domes, four of which are made from glass and three of which are made from traditional masonry stonework. Other features include a beautifully landscaped garden with cypress, palms and plumage trees, a library, a langor hall for women and an Islamic art museum. The walls of the mosque are adorned with 99 names of Allah which are inscribed in block lettering and are seen as an expression of divine power and majesty. The mosque is also illuminated at night by seven large chandeliers filled with over 6500 light bulbs.
