The church was originally built during the time of the Order of St John in the 16th century. The current Baroque-style facade was added in the 18th century. The original church in Senglea was built in the 16th century by the Order of St John as a parish church, replacing a more ancient chapel dedicated to St Julian the Hospitaller. This structure was severely damaged during the Great Siege of Malta in 1565, and reconstruction of the church began in the 17th century. During the 18th century the facade was replaced in the contemporary Baroque style, and the structures within the church were also adjusted accordingly.
