Our Lady of Hodegetria Chapel is a historical Greek Orthodox Chapel located in Edinburgh, Scotland. The chapel has a rich and important cultural significance for the Greek community in Scotland. It is named in honor of The Virgin Mary and was built during the beginning of the 20th century when The Greek Orthodox church was being introduced in Scotland. The chapel was dedicated by Archbishop Germanos Polites of Thrace in 1908 in the presence of both the Greek and British communities. History The origins of the chapel began in 1895, when Bishop Polycarp of Piraeus wrote to the Archdiocese of Edinburgh concerning the establishment of a branch Greek Orthodox Church in Britain. In response, Archbishop Cosmas Petridis led a mission to Scotland in 1907, which included a visit to Edinburgh. During their visit, the mission met with then-Lord Provost, Sir Daniel Cox, who granted permission to build the chapel. Facts • The chapel is located on George Street, between Frederick Street and Castle Street. • The building was designed by architect George Washington Browne, in an eclectic style combining elements of Byzantine and Renaissance architecture. • It is the seat of the Archbishop of Thyateira and Great Britain, who is an honorary member of the Edinburgh City Council. • The chapel was consecrated in 1908 and has served as the headquarters of the Greek Orthodox Church in Scotland since. Services The chapel serves its local Greek Orthodox community with a range of services, including worship services, readings, lectures, and discussion groups. The chapel meets for regular prayer services and holds baptisms, confirmations, and memorial services. The chapel also offers pastoral counselling and visits the sick in hospitals or at home.
