According to legend, the site where Madonna ta Loretu stands today was once home to a small chapel dedicated to the Virgin Mary. One evening in 1292, a shepherd spotted a light emanating from within the chapel. Upon investigating, he found the Blessed Virgin Mary illuminated within. This is why, it is considered one of the oldest churches in Malta.
