, St Francis of Assisi Church is a Roman Catholic parish church located in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. It is named after Saint Francis of Assisi, the patron saint of ecology and animals, and was established in 1735 as part of an effort to spread the Roman Catholic faith in the colony of Pennsylvania. The Church History The building was erected at the direct orders of William Penn, the founder of Pennsylvania. The founder of the parish, Bible Hall, was crucial to its growth in the 18th century, and his legacy still remains in the parish records and artifacts. The church building was the first site of public prayer in the colony, and was located at 11th Street and Chestnut Street, then the heart of Philadelphia’s Roman Catholic community. The church, named in honor of the patron saint of ecology and animals, was designed by Neoclassical architect Pierre L’Enfant. The Church Facts The building, constructed in 1797, has undergone many repairs and renovations over the years, with the most recent being when the portico was completed in 2004. The building has stained glass windows from Europe and the United States, frescoes from the late 19th century, a grotto of St. Francis of Assisi, and two murals from the 1920s. The church is listed in the National Register of Historic Places and is a contributing structure to Philadelphia’s Old City Historic District. The Church Services St. Francis of Assisi Church has a variety of services for its members and guests, such as Sunday Masses, musical concerts, special services and retreats, prayer services, bible studies, reconciliation, and more. The church also hosts a weekly “Youth Night” on Thursdays, an event that welcomes youth, aged 11-18, to come and have fun, learn, and share faith experiences.
