The Church of St Nicholas (Knisja ta’ San Nikola) is an active parish in the Roman Catholic Diocese of Malta. Formally known as Saint Nicholas of Bari, it is located in the town of Rabat, Malta. Built in 1646, the church is considered one of the oldest in the country and had served as the main parish church of the town until the construction of Saint Joseph's Church in 1894. The façade of the church is in the Baroque style, while the interior is considered to be one of the most beautiful examples of old baroque art. The church is dedicated to Saint Nicholas, a 4th-century bishop and an early Christian saint, and is commonly referred to as the Rabat church of St. Nicholas. It has been suggested to have replaced an earlier medieval church that was located on the site. The interior of the church is known for its expansive vaulted ceilings and its many altar pieces. The church is home to a number of remarkable artworks and artifacts from centuries past. These include an old painting depicting the crucified Jesus, an illustration of St. John the Baptist, and a wooden statue of the Virgin Mary with the Christ Child. The Church of St Nicholas offers regular services such as mass, confession, and individual prayer. Additionally, religious guidance sessions are offered several times a year and tours of the church are also available. During the Easter period, the church organizes a waxwork processional to celebrate the resurrection of Jesus. Additionally, there is an outdoor memorial dedicated to the victims of the Second World War.
