Knisja Santa Katerina tal-Italja In Malta: History,Facts, & Services
Knisja Santa Katerina tal-Italja is a small Roman Catholic church located in the Maltese port town of Birgu (also known as Vittoriosa). It is one of the oldest churches in Birgu having been built on the site of an even earlier chapel in 1618. The church is dedicated to Saint Catherine of Alexandria, Egypt's most famous saint and one of the Fourteen Holy Helpers. The interior of the church is simple and unassuming but features a life-size painting of the Madonna and Child on the main altar. Other notable features inside the church include a painting of the Baptism of Jesus by John the Baptist and several wooden statues of saints, including Saint Anthony and Saint Mary Magdalene. The church also features a 15th-century painting of a flower-filled garden landscape, said to be a gift from a famous visitor to the church. There is also a relic of Saint Venera kept in the church. Services are held every Sunday at 8:30am and Wednesday evenings at 7pm.
