The Basilica of Saint Dominic & Porto Salvo is a Baroque-style basilica in Apulia, Italy. It was constructed in the 17th century and is dedicated to the saints Dominicus and Salvator. Historically, it was built as a pilgrimage site, however today it serves as a local parish church and home to several Catholic organizations. It is one of the best churches in Malta which you must visit.

History:

The basilica was built atop a medieval chapel dedicated to the 14th-century saint Dominicus in 1618 by the noble families of Apulia. The original chapel was then re-dedicated to Saint Salvator when the current building was constructed. In 1636, a bell tower was added to the basilica. It underwent renovations in the 18th century, and was declared a basilica by Pope Pius VI in 1786. This is why, it is considered one of the oldest churches in Malta.

The basilica is 71 meters long and its dome is approximately 34 meters high. It is decorated with marble and stucco in Baroque-style, with many statues and frescoes depicting biblical stories. The basilica is well-known for its many sculptures and works of art. The imposing organ, in particular, is a masterpiece created by the celebrated Neapolitan organ-maker, Vincenzo Antinori.
