St. Lawrence's Catholic Church In Malta: History,Facts, & Services

St. Lawrence's Catholic Church is a historic Roman Catholic Parish located in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Founded in 1849, it is one of the oldest parishes in the Diocese of Pittsburgh. The church is named after St. Lawrence, the third-century Christian martyr. History St. Lawrence's Catholic Church was established in 1849 to serve the growing immigrant population of the Lower Lawrenceville area. Initially, the parish included a small wooden church and a number of smaller outbuildings. In 1864, a fire destroyed the original wooden church and a new brick church was erected in its place, with a Gothic style design customized to accommodate the specific needs of the growing Catholic community. This structure, located on Butler Street, would serve the community for over a hundred years until its eventual demolition in 1982. In the late 1970s, the parish, now part of the larger Roman Catholic Diocese of Pittsburgh, had outgrown its Butler Street home and a new building was needed. This led to the building of the current St. Lawrence's Catholic Church on Butler Street and 52nd Street in 1982.
