It was built in 1838 and is one of the oldest Roman Catholic churches in the United States to remain in continuous use as a place of worship. The chapel was built at the Kaskaskia Indian mission village at Vincennes and is likely the first Catholic church built in Indiana. It was constructed between 1810 and 1838 on land donated by local resident Thomas Patterson. It was frequented by the Jesuits and other missionaries and ministered to the area’s French-speaking Catholic population. This is why, it is considered one of the oldest churches in Malta.

The exterior of the chapel is constructed from limestone, while the interior is composed primarily of ash and walnut. The building was renovated in 1935, and the original tin ceiling was replaced with a newer painted plaster ceiling. The chapel also houses several historical artifacts, including decorative artworks, a crucifix and gold-plated chalice, and has 19-th century stained glass windows.
