Founded in 1820, and named after the martyr Saint Agatha, the parish is one the oldest parish churches in Canada. History:

St. Agatha's parish was founded in 1820, when the first German immigrants arrived in the area. The original church building was a small, whitewashed wooden structure, which was destroyed by a fire on June 21, 1844. After the fire, the Ursuline Sisters of St. Agatha assumed responsibility for the parish and, after over a decade of fundraising and the generous donations of Hamilton's Catholic citizens, a new church was constructed.
