History:

The parish was initially established as a chapel in 1960, with the original church being inaugurated in 1961. It is dedicated to St. Barbara who is the patron saint of all who suffer from fear and anxiety. This church is particularly important to those living in Swieqi and the surrounding areas, as the first masses were celebrated on Sunday evenings, thus offering them an alternative to the usual morning masses. In 2013, the original chapel was remodeled and a new altar was built in honor of St. Barbara. This is why, it is considered one of the oldest churches in Malta.
