After being destroyed in the atomic bombing of Nagasaki on August 9, 1945, the cathedral was later reconstructed and reopened in November 1959. History:

Urakami Cathedral was primarily built in 1895 and was designed by the French architect Jacques-Martin Tounier in the Gothic Revival style. It was located in the Urakami neighborhood and was the center of one of the oldest and most active Christian communities in Japan. The cathedral was a place of worship for thousands of believers and was home to many priests and nuns. On August 9, 1945, the church was destroyed in the atomic bomb explosion of Nagasaki. After the war ended, the Catholic Church rebuilt the cathedral in 1959 and has since served the people of Nagasaki and visitors to the city.
