Japan Evangelical Lutheran Mitaka Church In Japan: History,Facts, & Services

Japan Evangelical Lutheran Mitaka Church (JELM) is a synod of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Japan (ELCJ). It is the oldest Lutheran church in Japan and the only one located in the city of Mitaka. The church was established in 1926 by German Lutheran missionaries. The church is best known for its ministry of evangelism, worship, education, and social work to the people around it. Japan Evangelical Lutheran Mitaka Church History JELM was formed in 1926 when a small group of German-speaking Lutheran missionaries moved to the city of Mitaka. Since then, JELM has been a vital part of Lutheran presence in Japan. It is the spiritual home of many immigrants and their families who were attracted to Lutheranism's message of hope and redemption. JELM has been a part of numerous Lutheran mission movements, participating in the international connections that have helped to form a global Lutheran church. Japan Evangelical Lutheran Mitaka Church Facts JELM is affiliated with the ELCJ, a nationwide Christian organization of over 200 Lutheran churches in Japan. The congregation includes around 150 members, with both Japanese and foreign members. The church is a bilingual center, offering weekly services in both Japanese and English. The members of JELM actively participate in various service projects, including visiting nursing homes, leading Bible studies and providing meals for the homeless in Tokyo. Japan Evangelical Lutheran Mitaka Church Services JELM offers its members weekly services in Japanese or English. A typical Sunday service includes hymns and prayers, Bible reading, sermon and various service ministries for members and guests. The church also holds special services on the first Sunday of each month, including healing services and services dedicated to global mission. JELM also holds retreats throughout the year and other special events.
