It was established in 1950 by the Lutheran Church–Missouri Synod, a conservative church body based in North America. Japan Lutheran Church was first established in 1950 in Tokyo, Japan. The congregation was started by the Lutheran Church – Missouri Synod and was the first and only Lutheran Church to be permanently established in Japan and was incorporated as the Japan Luther League. In the mid-1990s, the Church began to grow rapidly, expanding to other cities such as Kyoto, Toyama and Sendai. The Church has a long history of engaging in outreach and evangelism and has grown to become the largest Lutheran church in Japan.
