Japan Evangelical Lutheran Church Osaka (JELCO) is a Christian community of faith that was inaugurated in 1941 on a platform of encouraging growth and renewal in Osaka, Japan. Its main goal is to share the love of Jesus Christ with people of all ages and backgrounds. Its mission statement states: “We exist for the glory of God and the spiritual nourishment of the faithful. Thus, we commit ourselves to the proclamation of the Gospel and the growth of Christian faith and fellowship.” It is one of the best churches in Japan which you must visit.

History:

JELCO was founded in 1941 by the Swedish Evangelical Lutheran Mission, who established the first congregation and served as its pastor until 1952. The church’s main building and grounds were donated by a Japanese Christian couple, who also built a mission center and provided housing for the foreign missionaries and their families. This is why, it is considered one of the oldest churches in Japan.
