Brief History:

The Atiq Mosque or Jameh Mosque of Mashhad is a prominent 14th-century mosque located in the city of Mashhad in northeastern Iran. It is one of the oldest mosques in Mashhad and is the most important religious site in Iran after the holy shrine of Imam Reza. The mosque has a small but beautiful courtyard surrounded by prayer halls and beautiful stucco and tile decor. The main hall of the mosque contains many inscriptions and artifacts from the Seljuk and Safavid era. It also houses a mihrab (featured niche in a mosque wall) which dates back to the 15th century. Architecture:

The Jameh Mosque of Mashhad is an impressive edifice which has a combination of traditional and modern Iranian architecture and is considered to be the largest mosque in the world. The mosque was built in 818 CE and has expanded over the centuries, adding new elements and wings. The mosque is set around a square courtyard with a large dome in the center. The dome is made of blue mosaic tiles and is covered with golden inscriptions from the Quran. It is flanked by four iwans (open pavilions) each with a minaret and adorned with intricate tilework. The mosque is surrounded by a massive perimeter wall and five gates that open onto the main courtyard. Inside, the mosque is composed of two symmetrical halls running along the east and west walls of the mosque, with four main iwans, two smaller iwans in the center and two more on the north and south walls. The floors of the central courtyard are covered with colorful tiles, and the walls are covered with elaborate calligraphy. The sanctuary contains beautifully carved cedarwood and tiled pillars which date back to the Fatamid Caliphate. The mosque also features a library, prayer hall, tombs of the Imams, and is home to a popular shrine of Ali al-Rida who was the 8th Imam of Shiite Muslims. The architecture of the mosque has experienced numerous additions and changes over the centuries, resulting in an impressive mix of traditional and contemporary design.
