Brief History:

It is also known as the “Atiq Mosque” or "old mosque". The Jameh Mosque of Yazd was first built in 8th century, and it has been continually rebuilt, repaired and extended since then, its present form mainly dates back to the 13th and 14th centuries. This complex is one of the oldest mosques still standing in Iran, and is one of the most significant buildings remaining from the Seljuk period. Architecture:
The Jameh Mosque of Yazd (Atiq Mosque) is an important and impressive example of Persian-Islamic architecture and one of the oldest mosques in Iran. It is located in the center of the city of Yazd and is of great interest to Iranian and foreign tourists. The mosque has a simple rectangular plan, consisting of Persian domes, large courtyards and tall minarets. The façade of the building is decorated with Islamic patterns and terracotta tiles, with an entrance topped by an ornate stone portal. Inside, the main part includes the main prayer hall (shabistan) where people pray, a central dome, and four smaller domes. The mihrab, or prayer niche, is believed to date back to the initial construction of the mosque in 1290. The main prayer hall is divided into two internal parts, the prayer hall located in the eastern part, and the southern pavilion of the mosque in the west. The mosque is architecturally and culturally significant for its traditional Iranian mosque structure, as well as its Islamic decorations and blue-tiled reflections. The courtyard is surrounded by arcades supported by wooden columns with palm frond tops. In front of the mosque stands the impressive minarets, and at the back you can find a large pond for ablutions. The Ziaratgah, or Shrine of Abbas, is located on the western side of the mosque and was added in 1768. Apart from its values of architecture and engineering, the Atiq Mosque also holds a lot of cultural and historical significance for the city of Yazd and is an important place of worship for the people of Yazd. This is why, it is considered one of the most beautiful mosque in the world.
