Brief History:
Shahi Masjid (English: Great Mosque) is a mosque located in Mathura, India that was built in 1661. It was commissioned by Shah Jahan and is one of the oldest surviving imperial mosques in the country. The masjid is known for its unique architecture and stunning beauty. It is believed to be one of the most significant Mughal mosque built in India. It has wide open courtyards, and five domes that are surrounded by double-storeyed cloisters. Architecture:
The Shahi Masjid, or royal mosque, in Mathura is an example of classic Mughal architecture. Built in 1661 CE, the mosque is located to the south of the Gokul Fort. The Shahi Masjid is constructed in the style of a typical Mughal prayer hall, with a courtyard surrounded by an arcade of four aisles, covered by a pair of double domes. The main entrance is decorated with red stone with intricate carvings of lotuses, vines, and other floral motifs. Inside, the prayer hall is made of sandstone and decorated with arches, cusps, and covered by a large central dome. The walls are further adorned with calligraphic inscriptions. The mosque is set upon a raised platform, inlaid with a zig-zag and trelliswork pattern. On the western side of the mosque, there is a minaret of five storeys, which is an example of the Mughal–style square minaret. This minaret is also decorated with several inscriptions. Overall, the Shahi Masjid is an example of classic Mughal architecture and is one of the most picturesque monuments in Mathura.
