Megalithic cists and cairns were common in ancient India. They are found scattered across many parts of the country, most notably in Tadipadi, an area in Tamil Nadu. Built in the early or late Iron Age, these megaliths mirror the people's artistic and spiritual qualities. History:
The megaliths at Tadipadi are mainly cists and cairns, some raised and some partly sunken in the ground. The cists were made with curvilinear megaliths, which were arranged in a circular pattern to form a cradle or cist. The cairns were conical structures made of stacked stones or boulders and were used as monumental tombs. Tadipadi had various shapes and sizes of cists and cairns, some even built out of mud mortar. The megalithic monuments of Tadipadi are believed to have been built some time between 1100 BC and 400 AD. Archaeologists suggest that it was during this time that the Iron Age people of the region developed socially and economically, constructing various monuments and burial cairns in honour of their ancestors.
