Overview:
Megalithic cairns with stone circles and sarvophagi, located in the Sikkarayapuram village in the state of Tamil Nadu, India are an important cultural heritage site. The site was discovered in 2009 and since then has attracted a lot of attention from archeologists and anthropologists around the world to unravel its mysteries. The site consists of over 100 megalithic cairns, vast stone circles and several sarvophagi. The cairns have been arranged in six clusters, forming two concentric circles around each other. It currently serves as a source of research for archeologists and anthropologists, as the site has yet to be fully explored and deciphered. This national monument of India portrays the history and culture of the country.
History:
One of the most notable features of the Sikkarayapuram cairns is the central stone circle, which contains four megalithic cairns arranged in a spiral pattern with the largest one at the center. Other than this, there are several other cairns, stone circles and sarvophagi that are believed to have been used for some sort of ritualistic purpose. Furthermore, many of the cairns have been broken down and hence can provide further information about the different architectural styles and construction techniques used in the ancient times. Studies suggest that the Sikkarayapuram cairns are over 7,000 years old and are said to be the largest Neolithic culture monuments in the region.
