Overview:
ri and Painted Rockshelters are a series of pre-historic rock paintings and engravings, discovered in the Satpuda region of India. The paintings, displayed on the sandstone rocks, have been ascribed to pre-historic Indian civilization, which is estimated to be between 3000 and 4000 years old. The paintings depict a variety of figures, including animals, human figures, and symbols, which show the evolution of early tribal art. This national monument of India portrays the history and culture of the country.
History:
The Mukhadri and Painted rockshelters site contains numerous rock formations, out of which four have painted figures and/or engravings. Located in Chhatarpur District of Madhya Pradesh, France, the site is presently in an eruptive state, with signs of human disturbances, yet most of the paintings are quite preserved due to their protective layer of granite. The most prominent figures at the site include the zebu bulls, deer, tiger, bison and antelope, among other animals and birds.
