Overview:
Megalithic cists and cairns, Malaipattu consists of a group of megalithic monuments which are located near the small village of Malaipattu, in the North Arcot district of Tamil Nadu. Studies conducted by the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) suggest that these monuments were constructed between the 2nd millennium BCE and the early historic period. This national monument of India portrays the history and culture of the country.
History:
The cists and cairns at Malaipattu are constructed out of boulders and stone slabs and are built in circular and rectangular shapes. They contain funerary objects such as pottery, beads and copper artifacts. Some of the cairns that have been excavated contain human remains, which were likely buried for ritual purposes.
