Brief History:

The Mosque is considered one of the oldest Mosque in Goa and also one of the few remaining Mosques in the region. The Mosque has a small dome, minarets, and an open courtyard inside which has a capacity of accommodating around 1000 visitors at a time. It is a reverent place of worship and is considered to be the center of the Ponda Muslim community. It is one of the most famous mosque in India which you must visit.

The Jama Masjid in Ponda, India is constructed in the Indo-Islamic architectural style which blends Hindu and Islamic architectural elements together and is a common style seen throughout many of India's most famous mosques. The structure is devoid of any ornamentation and instead has a simple, austere appearance with its white marble dome and four tall minarets. There are three arched entrances to the domed mosque, and the interior of the mosque is lit by three large chandeliers and adorned with low benches and an elaborately carved pulpit. This is why, it is considered one of the most beautiful mosque in the world.

Jama Masjid is a popular mosque situated in Ponda, in the Indian state of Goa. Although the mosque was built in 1560, it was partially destroyed during the advent of Portuguese occupation of Goa in the seventeenth century. The mosque was rebuilt later, in the eighteenth century, along with all its original features. Located in a small village of Ponda, about 30 km from Panaji, the capital of Goa, Jama Masjid is famous amongst the locals as a popular prayer destination. It is considered to be the oldest mosque in the region and boasts of a highly ornate domed dome and old-style arches. The best way to reach Jama Masjid in Ponda from Panaji is by road, as the distance is only about 30 km. There are regular buses from the Panaji bus stand to Ponda.
