Brief History:
Jama Masjid, the most imposing Muslim monument in Meerut, is believed to be constructed by Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan in 1630 AD during the reign of the Mughal Dynasty. This grand masjid is located in the historic city of Meerut, Uttar Pradesh. It is one of the most important landmarks of Meerut. Jama Masjid, a well-preserved monument, is also known as Shahi Jama Masjid and Akhoon ka Masjid. It has been designed in the form of a square with four huge minarets, each being 51m high with 15 balconies on each minaret. Inside the Jama Masjid complex, there is a massive hall and four storied octagonal structure known as the 'Chhatri'. Several inscriptions of the Mughal period have also been discovered from the inner sides of the walls and one of them is dated back to 1660 AD. Jama Masjid is a must visit place for both the locals and tourists in Meerut. It is one of the most famous mosque in India which you must visit.
Architecture:
The Jama Masjid is made of brick and is based on an Indo-Saracenic style of architecture. The facade of the mosque is adorned with a number of decorative domes, minarets and arches, all of which were constructed using red/buff colored sandstone. The mosque has four large open courts, in which visitors can congregate. It has a square shaped prayer hall with five arches on each side. The entrance to the prayer hall is decorated with scalloped arches and the interior walls are adorned with stucco work. The prayer hall is flanked by two minarets, which are ornately decorated with intricate designs. The prayer hall also has a beautiful chandelier hanging from its roof. This is why, it is considered one of the most beautiful mosque in the world.
